Located on one of the Florida Keys, the 965-acre Long Key National Park was once the site of a luxurious fishing resort that was destroyed by the Hurricane of 1935. It may not be a resort it once was, but the beauty of this state park is undeniable. Today, visitors are encouraged to canoe through lagoons and hike two luscious land-based trails. Let’s be honest—this is more like a relaxing vacation more than a camping trip! Take a break from the hustle and bustle of life and enjoy Long Key State Park.
What to Do
Wild Life Viewing:
The park is located on the Great Florida Birding Trail, which means there is an exceptional opportunity for catching glimpses of wading, shorebirds and migratory birds. Herons and Egrets are common, but the lucky viewer might spot a White-Crowned Pigeon and Roseate Spoonbill.
Star Gazing:
Due to the park’s minimal light pollution, Long Key National Park has excellent views of the night sky. On Tuesday nights, the Florida Keys Astronomy Club provides classes about the stars.
Snorkeling and Swimming:
These activities are only available in designated areas. The water is generally shallow enough and the waves are gentle. You can view the ocean bottom covered in seagrass and filled with sea life. Set up your Privacy Shelter on the beach and change into your swimsuits for a fun-filled day in the ocean. Visitors will often spot jellyfish and some exotic fish.
Hiking Nature Trail:
There are two nature trails for visitors to explore! The Golden Orb Tail is an easy 1.1 mile walk through multiple plant and animal communities. The Layton Trail is located on the bayside of the park with a breathtaking view of the Florida Bay.
Fishing:
The best sports fishing in the Florida Keys is available in Long Key National Park, but a fishing license may be required. All fishing within the park must conform to regulations concerning size, number, method of capture and season.
Canoeing and Kayaking:
The shallow waters of the park’s shoreline provide the perfect opportunity for exploration. Kayaks are available to rent from the ranger station for two hour increments.
Where to Kamp
The shape of Long Key State Park makes it possible to only have one campground available, but there are 60 full-facility campsites located within the park, which means each one comes with a picnic table, ground grill, running water and electricity. Reservations may be made up to 11 months in advance. Wherever your campsite is, it is sure to have a beautiful view of the ocean.
