Three Easy Campfire Pizza Recipes

Get Crafty when Camping with Pizza

People love pizza; in fact, over 350 slices are consumed in the U.S. every second. Plus, pizza is the perfect food to take camping, requiring little cutlery or cookware to serve. The next time you’re cooking in the great outdoors, take your pizza to a new level by trying some toppings that complement the smoky infusion of your campfire or stove. Take note: October is National Pizza Month, so it only seems right to pay homage with your own specialty pie.

Some sure-fire recipes that are feasible and flavorful are outlined here.

Hot Dog Heaven

Bring some refrigerated pizza dough balls in your cooler for a snack that is ideal for camping. This recipe incorporates ingredients that you’ll probably have in your cooler.

Ingredients:

  • Ball of refrigerated pizza dough
  • Bottle of BBQ sauce
  • Cooked or grilled hot dogs; leftover is fine
  • A cup of baked beans or chili
  • Shredded cheddar cheese

Toast the crust first on your camp stove or over the fire, and then build your pizza. Cover the toasted crust with BBQ sauce, top with diced hot dogs. Spread chili or beans next, and top with shredded cheese. Lay on the grill or over the fire to melt the cheese before serving.

Catch of the Day

Skip the dough and crisp-up pita pockets over your campfire for an easy and sophisticated camp pizza.

Ingredients:

  • Pita pockets
  • Ball of mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh greens, like arugula, romaine, or spring mix
  • Cooked, cooled, and crumbled fish- such as mackerel, trout, or canned tuna
  • Crumbled bacon, leftover from breakfast works
  • Olive oil, to drizzle before serving

Once your pita is toasted, top with thick mozzarella slices and return to the grill or fire to melt the cheese. Top with the fresh arugula and crumbled bacon; top with your crumbled fish and a drizzle of oil to serve.

Pizza for Breakfast

Who said you can’t eat pizza for breakfast? Start off your day with a hearty breakfast pizza.

Ingredients:

  • Rounds of pizza dough, refrigerated biscuits, or leftover pancakes
  • Shredded potatoes or hash browns
  • Cooked and crumbled sausage, or other breakfast meat
  • Shredded cheddar cheese
  • Onions with enough butter to caramelize
  • Whole eggs (optional)

Cook the onions over the fire or grill in a skillet with butter until tender and sweet; remove from the heat. Toast small circles of dough over the heat, remove, and top with shredded potato, crumbled sausage, cheddar cheese and caramelized onions. Tuck near the coals until the ingredients are bubbling and golden. Top with eggs to complete your delicious breakfast.
